Although “factory farming” accounts for the vast majority of meat supplied to supermarket chains today, Dunbar Meat Packing is one of the few remaining facilities still custom-processing high quality livestock from small-scale local farmers. We provide our services in exactly the same way as we have for over 50 years, with a high standard for cleanliness and finished product.
Dunbar Meats has been family-owned since 1955 in Southeast Michigan. Paul Dunbar (Senior) started working with his uncle Howard in the early 1960’s and took over the retail store operation in Ypsilanti in 1966 upon Howard’s passing. The business relocated to Dexter with the purchase of Dexter Food Lockers in 1973, and changed to a custom meat processing business model. Moving to Milan in 1983 allowed for additional vertical integration of the business and offering new services to customers. Since 2015, Paul Dunbar (Jr.) has taken on the duties of overall management of the company, while Paul Senior continues to enjoy working alongside his son each day – but he is now focused upon running the smokehouse operation, to produce the delicious sausages and bacon which are a specialty of the house.
